Metal rings are often used for crochet projects such as mandalas and lanterns. But did you know that you can also make smaller ring sizes yourself? This is useful when you do not have the right ring size at home. It also makes it easier to adjust the ring size to your crochet work.

In this blog you'll learn step by step how to make a ring for your crochet work. At the end of the blog you can also watch the video tutorial.

Materials

  • Pliers
  • Wire
  • Tape
  • Measuring tape tape
  • A round object (I used an IKEA mug to create a 10 cm/3,9 inch ring)

Step by step

When making a ring with wire it is important to be careful. The ends of the wire can be sharp.

Step 1: finding an object

Find a round object that has about the same diameter as the size ring you want. For example, an Ikea tea mug was ideal for making a 10 cm/3,9 inch ring.

Step 2: wrapping

Take the wire and wrap it around your object. Keep the end in place. You wrap the wire around your object about 2-4 times. Personally, I find that wrapping 3 times gives the best result in terms of thickness.

Step 3: cut and remove

Cut the wire so that the ends are just touching. Once you are satisfied, carefully remove the ring from your object, keeping the ends together as best as possible.

You may have to start over a few times before you are happy with the result. This is okay; it helps, in fact, you have to practice.

Step 4: securing the ends

There are several ways to make sure the ends stay together neatly, but I personally choose to keep the ends together with tape.
Take a piece of tape and stick it over the ends. Check carefully that the ends are neatly together. Then continue to wrap the tape tightly around the ring.

Stap 5: reshaping if necessary

It is possible that when you loosen the ring and tighten the ends, the ring will deform a little. You can use your hands to push the ring into shape a little more. It can also help to place the ring around your object again and push on the deformed spots. Once you are done, carefully loosen the ring again.
