How many strands should I use for cross stitching?

Standard DMC thread comes in an 8-meter thread, consisting of six thinner strands. The strands can be divided into different quantities.
You can use the following guideline when choosing how many strands to use:
11 count | 4.5 crosses per cm | 3 strands |
14 count | 5.5 crosses per cm | 2-3 strands |
16 count | 6.3 crosses per cm | 2 strands |
18 count | 7.1 crosses per cm | 1-2 strands |

The used number of threads affects the final outcome of the embroidery.
More threads mean a more filled, fuller embroidery. This means the crosses fit together nicely and there's little space/fabric visible between the crosses.
Fewer threads means a more open embroidery. Using fewer threads may result in a more visible fabric between the crosses.
Both options are fine: it's completely customizable and depends on personal preference as well. You can always make a small test piece, using different amounts of strands. This way, you can better determine how many strands suit your taste.
The number of threads that suits you best depends on the fabric and personal preference. No matter what you choose, it's most important that it fits your style! Happy stitching! :)
